Institute of Teaching & Learning

The Institute of Teaching and Learning is a forward-thinking initiative dedicated to advancing accountancy education.

Through its various operating divisions, the Institute aims to contribute to the development of competent and passionate academics, provide academic support to students, prepare candidates for the SAICA IAC exams, and host events that foster important conversations in the professional accountancy education and training space.

The key divisions of the Institute include:

  • Focuses on mentoring and coaching academics and those aspiring to join academia, particularly those practising as accountancy professionals.
  • Aims to build a pipeline of competent and passionate academics.
  • We believe there are students with immense potential who have what it takes to perform well academically but are in great need of well-designed academic support initiatives. Through the usage of technological tools, we tackle students’ academic support needs. Our focus is on the ‘underdog’ student who needs that ‘extra’ supportive space to realise and achieve their academic success goals.
  • A supportive IAC Preparatory Board Course for SAICA’s IAC Examination in 2025 has been developed to assist candidates in successfully passing the SAICA IAC exams. The ITC Preparatory Board Course is expected to go live from 23 November 2024.
  • Intensive use of techno tools to provide academic support to the exam candidates will yield ITC exam success!
  • Hosts a variety of events, seminars, and webinars addressing key issues in professional accountancy education and training.
  • Events are open to academics, trainees, students, and training offices involved in the chartered accountancy value chain.

Founding Director

Mr Sitembele James

CA(SA) | M.Acc (UFS) | PGDip Public Sector Accounting (UCT)

  • Until 30 June 2024, Sitembele was the Project Director: Examinations at SAICA, heading up the examination processes including the quality assurance processes over the SAICA ITC examinations. While at SAICA, Sitembele oversaw exam improvement processes, including the design and implementation of the new examination system as part of SAICA’s digital transformation “Ushintsho” Project. 
  • On 1 August 2024, Sitembele joined Walter Sisulu University as a Director: Institutional Advancement (Fundraising & Resource Mobilisation).
  • A dynamic academic with extensive experience as a lecturer and senior lecturer in SAICA-accredited institutions.
  • Founded the non-profit organization In-Pursuit of Excellence (IPEX), empowering school-level learners.
  • Attended a Deloitte SA-sponsored trip to attend the One Young World Summit in 2012 in Pittsburg, Pennyslvannia in the United States.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentorship of other young people, with lots of those being CA(SA)s today.
  • As a Senior Lecturer at WSU (2018 – 2021), he participated in capacity-building projects, securing funds (in excess of R12 million) for student bursaries and academic support programmes.
  • As the Section Head: Auditing & Governance at WSU (2021), played a key role in the redevelopment of courses aligning with the SAICA CA2025 Competency Framework.
  • Co-authored and contributed in textbooks and serves in various governance structures and boards.
  • Sitembele has successfully completed the course-work of a Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Studies (2022) and the MPhil (IT Governance) (2023), both at the Nelson Mandela University and is currently completing the research modules of these programmes.

Managing Director

Mr Chuma Njomeni

CA(SA) | M.Com Taxation (UP)

  • Chuma is a dedicated young academic who works as a Senior Lecturer: Taxation at Walter Sisulu University’s Department of Accounting Science.
  • He plays a key role in the department’s student development and support services committee and leads a mentorship programme designed to benefit all students within the Accounting Science Department.
  • Chuma completed his SAICA-accredited training at AGSA where he later advanced to the role of Assistant Audit Manager. 
  • During his tenure at AGSA’s Eastern Cape Business Unit, Chuma was honoured with two excellence awards.
  • Passionate about academia, Chuma collaborates closely with Mr James on various academic projects.
  • He is a contributing author to the book “Ethics for Accounting Professionals: A Case Study Approach” published by LexisNexis in 2021.
  • Additionally, Chuma has experience serving as a
    SAICA ITC marker.

  • A determined, hardworking young man with a vision to contribute to making this world a better place.  
  • Jeff serves as a Senior Lecturer: Financial Reporting at WITS University and as a Non-Executive Director at the number of organisations, including Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA); Cricket Free State NPC.
